Tibet Travel to Lhoba Communities

The area south of the belt formed by Lhunze, Nang. Maining and Medog counties all the way to the traditional boundary line between China and India is historically referred to as the “Lhoyu”, that is, the traditional areas where the Lhoba ethnic group lives in a compact community. It lies at the southern foot of the Himalayas, with endless peaks rising one higher than the other. It has a warm, humid climate, receives abundant rainfall and rich in animal and plant resources. In short, its primitive ecological environment remains intact.
The Lhoba people are mainly engaged in farming and animal husbandry. The unique geographical and climatic environment of the area also provides good conditions fro hunting in the farming off-season. Tourists who stay overnight in family inns may accompany their hosts on a hunting trip.
Lhoba people have their own spoken languange, but not a written script. They used to keep records by tying knots and carving pictures on wood. Different tribes have different dialects, but this does not prevent communication. They are fond of singing and dancing, often composing imprompu songs and dance. Lhobas practice monogamy and in the past only marriage within the same tribe was permitted. Trans-tribal marriage was strictly forbidden and those who did so secretly were severely punished if they were discovered.
They practice cremation and ground burials. They do not have a religion, but worship nature. Sorcerers enjoy a high prstige. People invariably consult oracles for advice and to choose the most auspicious wedding day.
Lhoba men like to wear sleevelss jackets made of wool or animal skins, and a dagger at their waists; the women wear cymbal-like ornaments on their backs while small bells dangle from their waists, so as they walk, the bells ring rhythmically. When tourists politely request to take photos with them, more often than not, they will gladly allow it.
Tips: The best places to boserve the habits and customs of the Lhoba ethnic group are Nanyi Township of the Lhoba thinic group in Mainling County and Doyul Township of Lhunze County, Shannan. The former is also a famous sightseeing destination and easily accessible thanks to its proximity to the county seat. The latter is also accesible by road, but is relatively out of the way.
